The Shiny Luck is Disgusting – Porygon Community Day Round-Up

Hey guys! I haven’t done one of these in a long time, but I thought it was a good idea to do this for the round-up. Of course, I’m trying out an experimental drop time for this post, because I feel these posts would be better dropped a couple of hours after the event.

Porygon is a Community Day that we’ve been waiting to have for a long time, so much so that it was voted for in the vote. We won’t talk about Charmander because I won’t be doing that Community Day. But Porygon takes the cake for good Community Days.

Porygon benefits from being a fan-favoured for this, as well as it being a shiny that we’ve not had in the game thus far. Its 3x catch XP is a great incentive for the newer players, as well as those grinding for the rumoured level cap increase.

The first thing you’ll notice is that there was a timed research line in the Today tab, with the rewards being Up Grades and Sinnoh Stones, in order to help you evolve your Porygon collection. This is due to the fact that Porygon evolves twice with items. I still wish that trading for a free evolution was added for the Porygon line though, but that’s not up to me. However, I did get the Special Research, which I thought would be the way to get the items. However, I didn’t realise that such a timed research was going to be available. This should have been made more clear in the Today tab slot, as well as press releases. If I knew this was the case, I would not have purchased the Decoding Porygon Special Research (even ZoeTwoDots was surprised at the timed research).

Sadly none of my photobombs yielded any shinies, however that wasn’t a concern in the end. I was spending the day working from home, and so I had both accounts running. In typical fashion, my second account yielded the first shiny on the first click. I will admit I do get a bit stressed out in the initial stages of the day, with juggling both accounts and the Special Research. But somehow, like always, I made it work. The Special Research Porygon that I got was shiny, at least, and after the first hour I was looking at 15 shinies across both accounts.

I was saying to people that shiny odds were phenomenal, and actually they’ve been like this since Abra’s Community Day in April. The Community Days I have done have all come up much better than the likes of Piplup’s in January, for example. Even though I have less chances due to not walking around, I still have been getting way more shinies than usual. I’m sure Niantic had adjusted the shiny rates due to the pandemic, and I’d be a little sad once we readjust to going back outside and hunting that way. Of course, with talk of the UK possibly going back into lockdown, it doesn’t mean we won’t be able to go outside.

Today was a tad overkill though. In the end, I ended up with 46 shinies across both accounts – 13 on the second account, and the main snagged the other 33. Overall, I think playing for the entire six hours is overkill, and next time I’ll probably just stick to the first three hours.

Overall, today was a very positive Community Day. It ended up like the others in terms of my activities, but at the same time, I do miss going out and being part of the community. I might go out in November’s iteration, depending on the chosen Pokemon. But I will not be doing Charmander’s Community Day.
