Hey guys! We’ve come to the end of the short series of ranking the executions based on how much I enjoyed them. Today’s post looks at the executions used in Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony!
As ever, because this does feature character deaths, a spoiler alert is in place. Want despair? Read on!
Wild West Insecticide
Executed: Gonta Gokuhara, Monophanie & Monotaro
The reason why this is at the bottom is because of the parts where Monophanie is ‘giving birth’. Of course, it was just weird that that had to happen, but at the same time, you gotta feel bad for Gonta.
Executed: Tsumugi Shirogane, Monokuma, K1-B0 (self-destructed), Shuichi Saihara (survived), Maki Harukawa (survived), Himiko Yumeno (survived)
Of course, this execution signals the end of the game, and everyone gets it. Tsumugi and Monokuma are the first to go, visibly getting crushed by debris while K1-B0 destroys the academy. It’s pretty symbolic that K1-B0 decides to self-destruct and open up the way for Shuichi, Maki and Himiko to survive the execution and leave the confines of the game.
Strand of Agony
Executed: Kirumi Tojo, Monosuke
It’s interesting that Kirumi tries to escape with all of her might, having to climb up a strand of thorns to a possible exit. However, the strand leads to a ceiling and she just…falls. Monosuke pulls the hilarious ‘I can’t see without my glasses’ routine before getting crushed in the process. Good.
Blast Off! Second Ignition
Executed: Kaito Momota (failed), K1-B0’s ahoge
This execution was a very interesting call-back to Jin Kirigiri’s execution in Trigger Happy Havoc. This time, the ship goes the other way, drilling through the earth before going into space. Of course, Kaito fulfilled his dream of going to space, and succumbed to his illness with a smile on his face. It’s just the fact that the execution essentially failed, and Monokuma’s visibly angry expression, as well as the demise of K1-B0’s ahoge.
Executed: Kaede Akamatsu, Monokid
I literally hum the tune of Der Flohwalzer every so often, purely because of this execution. It’s also the first time we’ve seen a protagonist that we’ve played as have a successful execution. Of course, she ends up being used to play Der Flohwalzer badly (which is actually one of the easier piano pieces to perform), and then…hangs around for a bit before getting crushed. Of course, Monokid gets shoved in and crushed too, and thus begins the precedent for killing off the Monokids in executions.
Cultural Melting Pot
Executed: Korekiyo Shinguji, Monodam
I like all of the aspects of this execution, harking back to old torture and punishment methods used in Japan, with a shrimp tie, death by boiling and the throwing of salt to banish evil spirits (and it’s funny that Korekiyo’s sister gets in on the act as well). I suppose after death, Monokuma decides to rub salt in the wounds! To be fair, the music drives this home more than anything. Plus Monodam decides he wants no more of this shit and just offs himself. It’s bloody beautiful!
