While my Pokemon aren’t usually considered elite and staples on competitive teams, I like these Pokemon and I see these as my favourites of each type. I know some of these Pokemon appear on others’ least favourites lists, but that doesn’t matter to me, we all have our own opinions (I know for a fact one of my frequent readers actually has one of these listed Pokemon as his least favourite of that type – go check him out: https://thattinywebsite.com/ – hi Tim!). Plus I know people whose favourite lists include the usual Lucario, Charizard and Mewtwo.
Clearly this list is released before Sword and Shield, but I may come back to this at a later time with additional favourites.
Stufful has my favourite cry, tied with Bewear for contrast. It may come as no surprise that I’m very fond of cute Pokemon, and Stufful is one of them. It doesn’t hurt that it evolves into Bewear, and Bewear is just destructive. Its shiny form is also one of my favourite, too.
Honourable mentions: Stoutland, Porygon-Z
Omastar is probably not the best Water-type you can bring out, but I love it regardless. I chose it as my first fossil Pokemon, and I think Omastar is probably still my favourite Kanto Pokemon to this day. And it’s a literal god so that helps (Praise Helix).
Honourable mentions: Gyarados, Swampert
Volcarona is just simply a beast (despite its 4x weakness to Rock). Its shiny is gorgeous, and I like moths, which it is based on. While I do have qualms about its late stage evolution from Larvesta (level 59), you can catch a static encounter in the Relic Castle in the Unova region, as well as it being an SOS battle encounter in the Lush Jungle cave in USUM. I also enjoyed using it to help my Masuda-method shiny hunting, thanks to its Flame Body ability.
Honourable mentions: Arcanine, Chandelure
After Luxray and Roserade, Ludicolo is one of my favourites. Admittedly I’m not as fond of Lombre as I am the rest of the line, but I love the design of Ludicolo, as well as its dancing sprite. I was hooked on Ludicolo when I saw its shiny, I have to admit.
Honourable mentions: Alolan Exeggutor, Trevenant
For me, Hawlucha’s design is incredible. It resembles a luchador, and I love its Flying Press signature move. While it’s not the greatest Fighting-type in terms of defenses, its Attack and (especially) Speed are nothing to be sniffed at.
Honourable mentions: Lucario, Machamp
I considered putting Hypno here for nostalgia reasons, but Alolan Raichu won it out for me. As soon as I saw the new form and the typing, I knew I wanted one on my team. I didn’t have one on my team, but there’s only so much room, especially when there are tons of other Pokemon you love. I feel that the Alolan form is a much-needed upgrade to the Kantonian form that we already have, that is constantly overshadowed by Pikachu.
Honourable mentions: Hypno, Gardevoir
Mimikyu is another Pokemon that I wanted on my team, but never had. I adore its lore, that its disguised as a Pikachu so that it can receive the love it craves, because if anyone sees its real form, they die. Poor thing. Its Disguise ability really helps if someone immediately sets up a Z-Move (especially towards a Totem Mimikyu). It allows it to take a hit, and then enters Busted Form. Even better is that it received its own exclusive Z-Move ‘Let’s Snuggle Forever’.
Honourable mentions: Drifblim, Sableye
Clearly I chose the Sail Fossil when playing through Pokemon Y. And I kept my Aurorus in through to the Elite Four. As with some of the other choices, I absolutely adore shiny Amaura and Aurorus. If I had to choose the fossil again, I might give Tyrunt a try, but that’s not to say I wouldn’t use Aurorus again.
Honourable mentions: Alolan Ninetales, Froslass
I didn’t want to add any Legendaries or Ultra Beasts, but I’m making an exception with Kartana. Kartana was one of the Pokemon that I wanted to shiny hunt. Only with this one, I got it first try. While you don’t get Kartana until post-game, it’s still a fascinating Pokemon to me. It’s also one of the Pokemon that convinced me to get the Sun and Ultra Sun versions (although I wouldn’t have said no to Pheromosa).
Honourable mentions: Aegislash, Metagross
Roserade is my favourite Pokemon after Luxray, no doubt about it. It was a Pokemon that I worked so hard to get straight from a Budew, and I feel I lucked out with Poison Point, aiming to poison as many opponents as I could. It’s definitely my go-to for taking out Fairy-types.
Honourable mentions: Nihilego, Toxapex
I’m going to be that weird person that comes out and says that Gigalith is pretty. There, I said it. No matter, despite it being slow, it can definitely take some hits. It boasts a mammoth defense stat, and a slightly higher physical attack stat.
But the shiny’s so pretty too!
Honourable mentions: Shuckle, Crustle
To be utterly specific, East Sea Gastrodon is better than West Sea,
Now we have that out of the way, while its only weakness is a 4x weakness to Grass, it’s a case of making sure you don’t switch it in to something that can use a Grass-type move. It’s not the best Pokemon Speed/Defense-wise, but being a favourite doesn’t mean it has to be competitively viable.
Honourable mentions: Garchomp, Nidoking
I played through so much of Ultra Sun with Charjabug that I kinda feel indifferent to Vikavolt. However, Charjabug has me as its accordion-style cry and its movements just after it’s released from the ball.
Also once again, very pretty shiny.
Honourable mentions: Paras, Kricketune (that cry though)
I started with Popplio because I felt bad for all the hate it was getting. It was unnecessary hate. While everyone struggled with Totem Kommo-o and Ultra Necrozma, when Primarina was concerned, Kommo-o was one-shot with Moonblast, while Ultra Necrozma, while challenging, wasn’t particularly difficult to the point of rage-quitting, it was just a bit tougher than the average fare.
But that’s just it. Primarina was a Pokemon that I shared two adventures with (yes I went for Popplio both times), and it still remains my favourite Fairy-types.
Honourable mentions: Sylveon, Mawile
Umbreon is my favourite Eeveelution, and now we have that out of the way, I just feel that I gravitate towards Umbreon more than other Dark-types. Not that I wouldn’t use them. Umbreon’s generally a very bulky Pokemon that may need a bit of extra boost in its offense, but I still treasure it all the same.
Honourable mentions: Honchkrow, Weavile
I’ve always loved the design for Hydreigon, and as the name suggests, it’s a hydra-dragon (with three heads).
My only qualm with Hydreigon (like Volcarona) is the time it takes to evolve from Zweilous. Zweilous evolves into Hydreigon at level 64, and it’s part of the slow levelling rate. So you’re looking to get close to the endgame before you get your Hydreigon. But I suppose it’s worth the grind.
Honourable mentions: Noivern, Dragalge
Staraptor is my favourite Route 1 bird Pokemon. I always find it so fierce and powerful (its Attack and Speed stats prove that, too), and it was a staple in my Pokemon Diamond team along with Luxray and Roserade.
Honourable mentions: Togekiss, Braviary
Of course, you knew it had to be on here. I’d just started playing Pokemon Diamond when I encountered some new things to catch. I saw this little feline, followed by its cry, and I knew I had to have a Shinx of my own. I had so much fun with it, and that’s all I really cared about. After training it up so much to become a Luxray, I was amazed by its design, and I was happy that I was able to progress with it. Sure, it may not have been the best Electric-type to go with, but it was my favourite.
Honourable mentions: Electivire, Jolteon
